Dal Henderson “Overexposed”, October 2013

“Overexposed” by Dal Henderson Opens October 3

Fresno artist, Dal Henderson’s ironically titled exhibition opens October 3, 2013, at 1821 Gallery. The reception will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on October 5 at 1821 Calaveras Street in Fresno’s downtown cultural arts district.

Henderson’s reemergence on the gallery circuit will certainly be welcome to those who have long enjoyed one of Fresno’s most prolific and accomplished artists; his last exhibition in Fresno was in 1997–thus, the tongue in cheek title of his long awaited return to the gallery scene in Fresno’s bustling arts district.

While he eschewed exhibiting, Henderson has continued to work steadily over the past 15 years with the remarkable energy and imagination that has characterized his practice over the past 40 years. Recognition has not been confined to local audiences, however. His work has been shown at prestigious galleries in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Florida, Arizona and throughout California, and has been favorably reviewed along the way. The art world’s most influential North American periodical, ARTFORUM  called the linear quality of Dal’s work “ragged and sensitive… subtractions from the surface, not additions…[that show] how simplicity of means often reveal the most intent.” His work has been acquired by numerous public and private collections in this country and abroad.

In the past few years Dal Henderson has been exploring digital media as a tool to produce his vibrant, sophisticated work. His large format prints feature layered color and forms that are at once abstract and suggestive. Ideas and feelings emerge as the viewer explores these impressive works on paper. Henderson’s new paintings are closely related to these prints, with their brilliant palette and layered surfaces.

Henderson’s long career here has made him one of Fresno’s most esteemed artists. Educated at California State University, Fresno, Dal Henderson received his MA in the late 1960s and taught in the Art Department there in the 1970s. For over 40 years he has continued to work in his studio with dedication and skill, producing a large body of work that the public will finally be able to share during this month long exhibition.
