Are You Going With Me? By Bill Bruce – December 2012

1821 Gallery & Studios will host the of work by Bill Bruce during the month of December. The exhibition entitled, Are You Going With Me? opens for ArtHop on December 6 from 5-8 pm and runs through December 21.
Are You Going With Me? explores an interconnected relationship between art and music. Bruce, who has volunteered thousands of hours as an on air jazz DJ with public radio stations in Fresno, is an avid music collector. He cites the presence of music throughout his creative process as “a friend I can count on.” The paintings in this exhibition have been given song titles which represent Bruce’s musical tastes and celebrate his lifelong love affair with music.
A member of Fig Tree Gallery for over 20 years, and with a studio in downtown Fresno for over a dozen years, Bill Bruce remains an active participant in the vibrant Fresno art community and currently serves as Vice President of the Cultural Arts District Association.
A self-taught painter, Bruce got his start in the Haight Ashbury district of San Francisco in the late 50’s after being discharged from the Navy in 1955.  Joining a small group of artists who called themselves the “Artist’s Consortium” he exhibited in small store fronts and Golden Gate Park. Since his first one person show at the Lucien LeBault Gallery in San Francisco in 1966, his work has been exhibited from Oregon to San Francisco and south to Bakersfield.
“My roots in painting embraced the abstract/expressionist movement of the 50’s and 60’s, and my work today still harbors the freedom and energy that characterizes that philosophy”
The artist will hold a reception on December 8 from 3-6PM.
